Veg Oil & Energy Monitor

Palm oil competes with diesel as biodiesel feedstock and is priced in ringgit at home, so crude oil, gasoil and the ringgit move its demand and its local price. This page tracks them daily and turns them into the spreads palm traders watch.

Crude oil and diesel

Both in US$ per tonne so they can be compared with vegetable oils. Diesel is the US Gulf Coast ultra-low-sulphur benchmark, a proxy for gasoil.

Palm oil against gasoil (POGO)

Palm oil minus diesel, US$ per tonne, monthly. When palm is far above diesel, blending it into biodiesel only happens where mandates or subsidies require it.

The ringgit

A weaker ringgit (more ringgit per dollar) lifts the local price of palm oil even when the dollar price is flat.

Sources and method

Brent and diesel: U.S. Energy Information Administration daily spot prices (public domain). Ringgit: Bank Negara Malaysia Open API, the noon USD/MYR rate (mid of buying and selling). Palm and soybean oil: World Bank monthly averages, via the Palm Oil Market Monitor. Palm in ringgit = the dollar price times that month's average USD/MYR; this is an indication, not the Bursa FCPO price. Conversions: 1 tonne of crude ≈ 7.33 barrels; 1 tonne of diesel ≈ 312.6 US gallons. POGO = palm oil (US$/t) minus diesel (US$/t), both monthly averages.
